Where to Find Product Design Inspiration

If you’re waiting for the next product idea to appear in your mind, why not get inspired by the world around you? Sources of inspiration may be closer than you think. Here are a few ways you can be inspired to spur your imagination and get started on the product design and development process.

Travel

Whether you travel far or within your own town or state, trying something new can be quite inspiring. The idea is to get out of your comfort zone. Explore a new place, immerse yourself in a new culture, or experience a different environment to spur your creativity.

Take a Walk

To feed your creative process, you needn’t go far at all. Take a break and go for a walk. Getting out of the office for a bit can help clear your head. The exercise can help you feel good too. At the very least, you’ll give your mind a break, which is good for creativity and product design inspiration.

Explore Nature

It would seem that inspiration should come during work hours, but your time off is just as important. Sometimes, the best thing is to escape civilization and appreciate nature. Take a hike in your local park, go mountain climbing, explore the beach at low tide, or have a picnic lunch beside a nearby pond—your excursion can make a world of difference.

Listen to Music

Put on a song that inspires you or listen to something you usually don’t. Try a different genre, whether it’s country, classical, or jazz; or, take in the lyrics of a rap or pop song that don’t always get this level of attention.

Browse Social Media

The greatest sources of inspiration may already be out there. There’s no harm in being inspired by images and video content on Pinterest or Instagram. People with expertise and curiosity in many fields can be found on social media sites.

Brainstorm

Building ideas is hard when they’re just stuck in your head. Use a vision board to project and develop your words, pictures, and ideas or write down thoughts in a small notebook. Getting together with a team of co-workers is often effective for idea development.

Read

Reading blog posts, inspiring quotes, autobiographies, or classic novels can put you in the headspace that leads to a creative boost. You’d be surprised at how your mind puts things together. Even if what you’re reading is completely unrelated, it can lead your project in a whole new direction.

Experiment

Stop thinking so much about a deadline or outcome. Experiment with the materials you have and allow your mind to get creative. The ideation that’s triggered by experimenting can lead to exciting revelations.
